The transformation of the 68th Street – Hunter College Station into a fully ADA-compliant facility marks a new era of accessibility and convenience for over 20,000 daily riders. This monumental project, executed by the Forte-Citnalta Joint Venture, with design expertise from Gannett Fleming and elevator installations by Mid-American Elevator, represents a significant milestone in modernizing one of New York City’s oldest subway stations.
The 68th Steet – Hunter College Station, which has served the community for over 100 years, now proudly stands as a fully ADA-compliant facility. This accomplishment ensures that all ridership, including those with disabilities, can navigate the station with ease and convenience.
The comprehensive design-build project includes several critical upgrades. The installation of three new elevators is pivotal in making the station ADA accessible, providing seamless access from the street level to the platforms. The construction of two entrances, a mid-block entrance at the Imperial House Building and another at the southwest corner of 69th Street, enhances station accessibility and convenience. Additionally, the reconfiguration of existing stairwells improves flow and safety infrastructure. Major work has been undertaken to extend the mezzanine, providing additional space and improving passenger movement. Significant enhancements to the station’s communications and electrical systems ensure reliable and efficient operation.
This project underscores the MTA’s commitment to making New York City’s transit system more accessible and user-friendly. The successful collaboration of the Forte-Citnalta JV Team has resulted in a station that not only honors its historical significance but also meets the modern needs of its diverse ridership. This project is a testament to what can be achieved through dedicated teamwork and a shared vision of inclusivity and progress!
