We are proud to announce the opening of Elevator 219 at Union Square Station as well as Elevator 221 at 14th Street-8th Avenue Station – these elevators make the fifth and sixth to be completed under the MTA Design-Build Services project for replacing 19 elevators across various stations in Manhattan and Queens. The completion of the first six elevators marks the official completion of this contract’s first milestone for this vital initiative. Both of these elevators were put into service right on schedule!
This Design-Build project is a comprehensive effort aimed at modernizing subway elevator systems across the city. The work involves replacing all existing elevator equipment in the machine rooms with new, state-of-the-art technology designed to improve functionality and reliability. The project’s focus is to ensure that the new elevators meet current ADA standards, providing an ADA-compliant path of travel to each elevator. In addition to the equipment upgrades, the work includes modifications to elevator hoistways, leveling uneven floor surfaces, and addressing necessary repairs to structural elements.
Along with these mechanical and structural upgrades, the project is enhancing customer experience. New communication systems are being installed, including CCTV cameras, fire alarm systems, and intercoms, as well as communication screens inside the elevator cabs to provide riders with timely information and customer assistance. These improvements are part of a broader effort to ensure safety, convenience, and accessibility to all who rely on New York City’s subway system.
As the MTA continues to roll out these essential upgrades, the completion of these elevators brings us one step closer to fulfilling our goal of improving subway service for all riders. We look forward to completing the remaining elevators in the project and providing a more efficient, modern, and accessible transit experience across the city.
We are incredibly proud of the progress made and our project team for their relentless dedication and hard work to achieve this remarkable accomplishment! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to complete the remaining 13 elevators for this contract.
