Escalator 108 at Intervale Avenue Station in the Bronx is officially in service, marking a significant step forward in the NYCT Replacement of 12 Escalators project! This project aims to improve accessibility and replace aging escalators at key subway stations across the city. ES-108 is the eighth escalator to be placed into service as part of this effort.
ES-108 stands out for a few reasons. It is the only escalator in the project thus far serving an elevated platform and it has been the only one that required the construction of a new enclosure above ground, replacing an existing enclosure. Additionally, ES-108 is the only escalator of the entire project with an internal drive system, which contributes to its efficient operation.
The installation process involved building scaffolding up to 40 feet high and using a telescopic crane for the removal of the old escalator and installation of the new one. The team worked diligently to complete this task on time and within budget, ensuring that the escalator is ready to serve the station’s many commuters.
The installation of ES-108 is part of a broader initiative that includes the replacement of escalators at four stations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, including Intervale Avenue, High Street, Bowling Green, and Roosevelt Island, as well as upgrades to the escalators at 53rd Street – Lexington Avenue Station. These improvements are essential for modernizing the city’s transit system and ensuring accessibility.
